We’ve been a church here in Indianapolis, Indiana for about twenty years. We may not fit the common definition of the word “church,” and there are reasons for that difference. We think you’ll see that we are a church, however, even though the body here doesn’t look exactly like what people have commonly called “church” over the generations.
Please bear in mind that, in a larger sense, we really aren't interested in explaining exactly who we are and what we’re doing here in Indianapolis--or what many others are doing elsewhere in the United States and in Brazil, Honduras, England, Poland, Romania, Africa, and throughout the world. This isn’t just about us--it’s also about you. Anything that belongs to God is also important for God’s people. If there is something said or done anywhere in the world today, disciples of Jesus Christ--the learners and students of Jesus--are going to want to know about it so they can implement what is from God in their lives.
We don't recruit anyone. We have encouraged everyone (thousands upon thousands of people from around the world) who contact us to love their families and friends in the cities where they live. We aren't anything and don't have any interest in "being" anything. Playing kickball with our children, love, prayer, friends. That's it. No building, no staff, no salaries, no programs, no services, no rituals. Just loving and helping each other as best we can, with nothing to prove and nothing to protect. When you don't want money or fame or popularity or numbers, then life is pretty simple. The religious world in general solicits numbers and money, and this "turn off" to most non-Christians is actually fairly understandable. Jesus wasn't like that. We shred or send back every check that is sent to us, for over twenty years now, with our thanks for their kindness, but nonetheless a "please invest this in the city where you live. Life is not 'found' - it is 'BUILT' so love each other where you live."
Those here just want to go on quietly trying to love and care for and live out the Teachings of Jesus, the Son of God. Those who desire that, fine. Those who don't, equally fine. We have no agenda, no ambitions. Yes, we desire to stand for and live for the Truths of what Jesus taught, no matter how unpopular or uncomfortable they may be to us, or anyone else. But, that's just a choice we've made. Everyone else can do whatever they'd like to do, of course. We've got no animosity or barriers, and the proof of that lies in the many fabulous relationships we have in this country and worldwide, with no desire to "change" or "recruit" anyone, for over two decades now.
Not real complicated, but obviously quite hated by the religious and those with something to defend or protect. But, life goes on. :-)
